Cafe of Life to share park plans with Bonita Springs neighborhood

Jul. 26, 2012

Cafe of Life has invited the 600 households in Bonita Springs’ Leitner Creek/Rosemary Park neighborhood to an ice cream social from 1-3 p.m. Sunday.

The free event featuring Royal Scoop ice cream will be held on the site at the eastern end of the neighborhood where the nonprofit organization proposes to build a park that would include a playground, basketball courts, pavilion with grills and 2,500 square-foot community building. Cafe would have a serving kitchen there it would use to feed the needy on weekday mornings. The park would be available to the community the rest of the time.

Cafe now serves meals by the banyan tree in downtown.

At Sunday’s event, the ground will be painted and marked with signs showing where each part of the park would be. Cafe vice chairman Bruce Wheatley said board members and Lee County Sheriff’s Office representatives will be available to answer questions.

Cafe board members and city staff plan to bring a plan to the City Council where Cafe would lease for about $1 a year the land that would be donated by Lee County and spend about $500,000 to build and maintain the park in the neighborhood.
