First appearance of Cape Coral stabbing suspect: Porfirio Rivera, 50, was denied bond after asking for a pre-trial release to go back to work. He's currently been charged with second-degree murder in the fatal stabbing of his wife, Anna Rivera.

At his first appearance this morning a Cape Coral man who allegedly stabbed his wife to death petitioned to bond out.

"I been doing my job for like 23 years," Rivera said. "If I'm not released I'm going to end up losing my job."

Porfirio Rivera is a machine operator at Cemex Industries and a 25-year Lee County resident.

The judge revoked his pre-trial release. Rivera is on pre-trial supervision for a previous case of aggravated assault. Also taken into consideration were three previous charges of battery in 2006, 2002 and 1997 that were not formerly pursued. He was also arrested in 1990 for purchase of cocaine.

"Proof is evident, presumption great...Mr. Rivera is not only a danger to the community but has shown to be a danger to himself," said the prosecutor who then asked he be held without bond. Rivera's lawyer has the option of bringing a bond hearing if he chooses.

Rivera, 50, was charged Wednesday with second-degree murder. Police said he left a message on the phone of one of his wife, Anna Rivera’s friends on Sunday explaining he had killed his wife, planned to kill himself and that police should be called to the home.

Officers arrived to find Anna lying in a pool of blood in the kitchen and Rivera suffering from apparently self-inflicted stab wounds nearby, police said. He was hospitalized until Wednesday, when he allegedly confessed to police before being booked into the Lee County Jail.

He's expected back in court in February 18.
