More Festival of Light coverage

The 2013 Edison Festival of Light Junior Parade and Coronation took over downtown Fort Myers Sunday allowing the young participants to run, jog, strut, dance, clog, gyrate and wiggle their way in celebration.

The first event of the day was the Children’s Fun Run, giving youths from pre-kindergarden and younger to first second, third, fourth and fifth grades a chance to race against their peers.

McKenzie Travis, 6, ran at the front of the pack of first- and second-grade girls, crossing the finish line just in front of another girl.

Asked how she felt about the race, a visibly winded McKenzie said “Lucky!”

The parade was lead by a trio of motorcycle officers from the Lee County Sheriff’s Office.

Lined up at Monroe and First streets was the Kincade family of Fort Myers, dressed up as the Fred Flintstone Family.

“My mom was in the parade as a kid, and her mom was in the parade as a kid,” said Teresa “Dino” Kincade. The Kincades also won honorable mention for their float.

Prepping before the parade was a combined effort of 14 area families, which caught parade fever 55 years ago when Flo Rodrigues first had a float.

Their float, “Mad About Edisonia” was Most Outstanding Family Float.

Wrapping up the day’s events was the Edison Festival of Light 2013 Junior Coronation.

Master of ceremonies Ted Fitzgeorge announced the new king and queen: Emma Kate Stanley and Drew Norman Wallace.

Drew, 7, celebrated his birthday Sunday during the festivities. His parents, Ken and Katy Wallace, said it was the first time someone in the family was named to the top spot.

Emma, 7, daughter of Laurie and Robert Stanley of Fort Myers, was a first time regent for the junior court for the family.

“It was a good feeling,” she said.
