An order of soup dumplings from famed dim sum restaurant Yank Sing in San Francisco. / Special to The News-Press
Q: Hi Jean, Is there a restaurant that makes dumplings like Joeís Ginger restaurant in Chinatown in New York on Mott Street? They are very thin, with broth and pork or shrimp, steamed, and you have to make a hole on the upper part and slurp the broth. My daughter lives in New York and I love them. Please advise. Thank you,
A: I have never been to Joeís Ginger, but I have supped on the luscious soup dumplings from Yank Sing in San Francisco, and my life is better off for them Ė so I understand your passion. Dim sum restaurants are rare in these parts. E.L. Chinese (12995 S. Cleveland Ave., Fort Myers; 275-9996; elchinese.com) does an impressive array of dim sum Ė chicken feet in black-bean sauce, steamed lotus paste buns, curry squid Ė but I donít see soup dumplings on its menu. The only place Iíve seen soup dumplings here is Oímei Chinese Cuisine in North Naples (14700 Tamiami Trail N.; 254-8973; omeinaples.com). . We did not partake in the soup dumplings that night, but the menu features pork soup dumplings (five for $7.75) and crab meat soup dumplings (five for $7.95). I canít vouch for their quality, but at least itís closer than New York.
