Mason Taylor

More

The knock on Mason Taylor by most recruiting websites was his lack of athleticism. The 6-foot-6 senior dropped 20 pounds this past summer and went from one dunk as a junior to 20 dunks as a senior.

A gym rat, he also improved his shot from behind the arc in his three varsity years. He made five 3-pointers as a sophomore, 14 as a junior and knocked down 54 this past season.

“I worked really hard on being athletic and becoming a better shooter,” Taylor said. “Going into my senior year, sites were saying I wasn’t athletic enough. That’s definitely nice that they can’t say that anymore.”

Taylor played most of the season without junior Ricky Doyle, a Michigan commit, scoring 23.4 points per game. In a three-game-in-five-day stretch in late January the lefty scored 99 points. He led Verot to a 17-12 record, a ninth consecutive district title and a Class 4A regional semifinal appearance.

“It was a great year, I don’t think I could have played any better,” Taylor said. “I was happy in how I played and we had a good run but we could have made it a little farther.”

He leaves Verot as the all-time leader in rebounds with 639 and second on the all-time scoring list with 1,449 points. Texas Pan-American, Central Connecticut, and University of New Orleans are still in contact with Taylor, who’s waiting on the Division I offer that’s he’s dreamed about since the fourth grade.
