“Let’s go Gavin, let’s go!”

Yells and cheers came from the participants all decked out in green.

From 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. each grade took a turn around the field, skipping, jumping hopping but mostly walking. Walking for Gavin.

The whole school took the day to celebrate one boy’s strength and support his family. By the end of the Friday, they’d raised $2,800.

The Hope for Mito Walk-a-Thon, was the brain child of various teachers at Caloosa Elementary School where the now 6-year-old goes to kindergarten.

The Lawrey family’s journey was captured in a two-part series that ran in The News-Press in early April and has raised over $50,000 in donations toward medical expenses.

Gavin suffers from a mitochondrial disease. It has no cure.

There’s not been one day that the Lawrey’s haven’t received at least one letter from someone in the community reaching out to help as a result.

Today, if students brought in $2 donations they received a no-uniform pass.

Every child got green ribbon tattoos on their cheeks to bring awareness for “Mito.” Gavin walked two laps with his friend Asher Conway and was later pushed around in a wheelchair by his mother and friends.

“No matter what’s going on I have so much to be thankful for,” said Brandi Lawrey, Gavin’s mother. “The kids were just as excited as the teachers.”

One student, third-grader Leilani Riesgo, 9, donated half the savings that her late father left to her before he passed away several years ago.

She and her mother presented Gavin with $500.

“(Leilani) said, ‘I have everything I need,’” her mother, Vanessa Silva said. “She told me, ‘my mind is made up.’”
