2:59 P.M. — A close family friend has identified the shooting victim of a man who would later be killed in a deputy-involved shooting in Bonita Springs as Albert “Tony” Almeida.

Mike Campbell, who has power of attorney over Almeida, 47, said his friend cannot feel his legs and has not been able to sit up or eat solid food. He’s also had three vertebrae removed because of swelling.

Almeida, who works as a concierge at The Inn at the Springs in Bonita Springs, was shot in the back and the neck by Craig Spitz, according to Lee County sheriff’s deputies. They tracked down Spitz, who attempted to flee, and was later shot while getting out of his car with a gun in his hand.

Barry Trice, the vice president of Guest Services — the management company for The Inn at the Springs — said Almeida is “resting comfortably.”

“He’s doing well, but it’s still too early for a long-term prognosis,” he said. “I know a few of our employees went to visit him and they were encouraged by what they saw.”

Pat Dolce, spokeswoman for Lee Memorial Health System, classified Almeida’s status as “fair.”
