When asked what senior pitcher Jackie Owen meant to his softball team, North Fort Myers High coach Jeff Miner was not shy with his answer.

"She gave us the ability to compete at a high level," Miner said. "In order to compete at a high level, you have to have a pitcher like her. She is like the motor that starts the car. Without a good pitcher, it just wouldn't work."

Owen tossed all but one of North's innings this season and she helped push the Red Knights to a 21-6 record.

She compiled a 0.38 ERA with 281 strikeouts for the District 4A-11 champion Red Knights.

For her efforts, Owen has been named The News-Press All-Area Softball Player of the Year for the second consecutive season.

"We didn't have a No. 2 pitcher this year because of an injury," Miner said. "We knew pitching in every ballgame might take a lot out of her. But she wanted to do it, and she did it."

"It was great being able to wear the Red Knight uniform one last season," Owen said. "There were a lot of good things about our season."

Owen's most impressive pitching performance may have come in her final game. She held Naples, ranked No. 1 in the nation by ESPN Rise at the time, to just four hits and no earned runs but North lost the regional playoff game 2-0.

She said her favorite high school pitching memory was tossing a perfect game and striking out 12 against Riverdale last season.

"I didn't even know what a perfect game was until somebody told me after the game," Owen admitted. "There's a little bit of tension between the teams so that was great to do."

Owen will continue her pitching career next season at Daytona State College. The tentative plan after playing two years at Daytona is to transfer to Central Florida, Owen said.

Owen's friend and teammate Lexi Schlotter will be playing at Seminole Community College next year, Daytona's rival.

"I was actually supposed to go Seminole but I changed my mind and switched to Daytona," Owen said. "It will be fun to play them."
