Sipper's late surge leads to state tourney berth
Tim Sipper had a rough start to his second high school bowling season.
I dont know, Sipper said of the reasons why. Nothing was working. Then I realized the season was almost over. That week before districts, when I bowled, I realized this was my last chance.
Sipper, a senior at Island Coast High School, then reclaimed the form he hoped to have all season. He tied for second place at the Lee County Athletic Conference tournament with a 635. He then advanced to the state tournament at Boardwalk Bowl in Orlando.
Sipper averaged a 199.5 during the regular season with a season-best score of 268.
Sipper averaged a 220.5 (882 in four games) in qualifying for the medal round at the state tournament but lost his first two head-to-head matches.
Sipper credited his time spent at Coral Lanes in Cape Coral and the instruction he received from insurance salesman Ivan Davies for the improvement he showed from last season.
He helped me get the fundamentals down, Sipper said.
Sipper ended up placing 16th in the state.
I was excited, Sipper said. Last year, I was like 60th.
Island Coast junior finishes third at states
Jessica Davies had one tough act to follow from last season. She had to find a way to surpass herself.
Davies, the reigning News-Press Girls Bowler of the Year, wanted to improve her finish in last years state tournament.
I finished 20th last year, Davies said. My goal was to get into the top 16.
The Island Coast High School junior did even better than that.
Davies averaged a 203.2 for the season. She had a season-best score of 269.
Davies rolled a 575 over three games in placing second at the Lee County Athletic Conference tournament with an average of 191.6.
Davies then had an 824 four-game series (206 average) in qualifying for the medal round at the state meet at Boardwalk Bowl in Orlando.
Davies went on to place third in the state tournament. She lost to eventual state champion Katie Stark from South Lake High. Next season, Davies can go for gold.
I was really happy, Davies said. I had never gotten that far at states before.

Highlights: Stafford won the Lee County Athletic Conference tournament, surprising the field with a score of 670 while qualifying for the state tournament. That score set a new Mariner High record. Stafford averaged 182 during the regular season.
Evan Baranecky
Year: Freshman
School: Ida Baker
Highlights: Baranecky tied Tim Sipper for second place in the Lee County Athletic Conference tournament with a 635. Baranecky averaged a 230 during the season, helping to lead the Baker team to a district championship and a top seven ranking in the state.

Highlights: France averaged a 230 during the season, helping to lead the Bulldogs to the conference/district championship and a top seven ranking in the state.
Austin Brewer

School: North Fort Myers
Highlights: Brewer, The News-Press All-Area Boys Bowler of the Year last season, made the All-Conference team with a 588 at the conference tournament. He also averaged a 209 for the season. He had a season-best score of 279. He served the Red Knights as team captain.
