Lee County Sheriff Mike Scott attempted to distance himself from a Florida Department of Education investigation last week, disputing a statement attributed to him in a DOE report.

The investigation looked into the behavior of Deedara Hicks, then director of secondary operations for Lee County Public Schools, who was accused of showing up for work drunk in 2011.

In testimony to DOE, Lee County School Board member Jeanne Dozier said Scott had expressed concern about Hicks.

“During February 2012, School Board Member Dozier attended a fundraiser and was asked by Sheriff Mike Scott, ‘what are you going to do about her’ referring to Dr. Hicks,” according to the DOE report. “Sheriff Scott advised Ms. Dozier that Dr. Hicks appeared to be impaired. He also said that he has received several telephone calls in regard to her behavior in the community.”

In an April 23 letter addressed to Dozier, Scott said he does not recall that conversation.

“I am concerned that my name ended up in some type of official report on this matter,” he said in the letter. “I am aware of the media coverage regarding Dr. Hicks; however, my exposure to her has been limited and all favorable.”

Scott went on to say he assumes there was some sort of misunderstanding, which he hopes to clear up with his letter.

The investigation into allegations against Hicks sparked another controversy involving Superintendent Joseph Burke, who has been accused of wrongly stopping that investigation.

In February, DOE ruled the Hicks case warranted no further action by that office.
