Editorial: $4.6 million promise good thing for Lee

Apr. 30, 2013

We applaud the Lee County commissioners for approving the $4.6 million incentive deal to help bring the yet-to-be-disclosed company to Lee County.

We know it was a challenge to sign a contract without knowing the name but the commission made the right choice. From what has been reported by county officials there were too many positive economic factors to not pursue what is believed to be a Fortune 500 company.

We encourage the Legislature and Gov. Rick Scott to fulfill their part of the incentive deal and approve another $12 million in grant money.

Even with the incentive money, it is not lock tight that the company will come here. The company could work a deal to stay in its current location, but Economic Development Director Jim Moore, who knows the name of the company and has been in on virtually all the negotiations, told The News-Press he believed that if the incentive deal was in place, the company would move here. We should know soon.

There was no reason not to move forward with the contract. The company must create 700 jobs and provide $60 million in capital investments before it will see all of the incentive money. The county is out nothing at this point, so it only makes sense to agree on the stimulus package and move forward with bringing the company here.

We hope the next several days bring great economic news for the county, that a deal is in place and the name is released. A global company with a household name will help enrich our economic future through the creation of new jobs as well as bolstering the area tax base.

The commissioners took the first step Tuesday. We hope the state follows and the company sees benefits of completing the deal and moving to Lee County.
