The Estero Chamber of Commerce on Wednesday named Lee County's economic development director and Estero' fire district board chairman as 2013 Persons of the Year.

The chamber awarded James Moore, executive director of the Fort Myers Regional Economic Partnership as its Business Person of the Year, and Estero Fire-Rescue board Chairman Dick Schweers as Public Official of the Year.

They received their honors at the chamber's annual luncheon at the Hyatt Coconut Point Resort in Estero.

Moore was lauded for getting the county to invest $25 million in economic development incentives, the latest portion of which went to entice Hertz to relocate its headquarters to Estero.

"Everyone in this room is responsible for bringing business," Moore said. "A corporation doesn't come because of one person or one team, but it comes because of the community as a whole."

Schweers has served on the Estero board for more than a decade and is past president of the local Notre Dame University alumni club. He was lauded for being an active chamber member.

"This is a total surprise," said Schweers, who thanked his board, Fire Chief Scott Vanderbrook and his staff.

Earlier in the luncheon Florida Gulf Coast University Professor H. Shelton Weeks presented the latest business climate survey prepared by the school. It showed that business leaders are more optimistic than before but still have worries about things like health care costs and the national political climate.
