During the day it was a scorcher, sending people closer to the slightly cooler Gulf of Mexico water. But by the time evening fell and it was time for red, white and hues, the weather was cool by comparison.

Traditionally, Mother Nature usually asserts herself with a little light show of her own just before sunset, but this time around she took a back seat.

Thousands of people enjoyed the fireworks show, staged as usual from a barge about a quarter mile in the Gulf off Resident’s Beach, and screams and hoots of appreciation greeted the impressive finale.

Earlier, there was a hot dog eating contest, kids’ patriotic swimsuit contests and a sandcastle building contest, all of which led to the build up for the evening’s spectacular finale.

See a spread of the action in the July 10 edition of the Marco Island Sun Times, and watch for a photo gallery of how the day went.
