Mary Koontz, 59, who lives in the gated South Seas Club on Marco Island, has spent almost a week behind bars and is being charged with the first-degree murder of her ex-husband Ronald Gene Koontz.
Ronald Koontz, 66, who had moved to Baltimore County, was shot inside his home by his ex-wife while the victim's teenage daughter hid in a closet at the time of the shooting.
Baltimore County police officials say the daughter called 911 at 6:17 a.m. and reported a shooting at the victim's home on Manor Springs Court.
Reports indicate that Mary Koontz opened fire on her Ronald Koontz with a handgun that was later recovered by police. The victim had been shot multiple times and was transported by helicopter to the University of Maryland trauma center where he immediately underwent surgery for his injuries. He died on Friday afternoon.
His ex-wife was arrested by Baltimore County Police on Friday after officers arrived on the scene and found Ronald Koontz pinning the suspect to the ground in front of the house so that she couldn't get away. Although believed to be domestic related, detectives do not have a motive for the shooting.
"She was taken to a hospital for treatment," said Cpl. Mike Hill, a Baltimore County police spokesman. "She is remanded on no bail at and is at a state hospital. The psychological evaluation is ongoing."
Mary Koontz has been charged with first-degree murder and if found guilty, she faces up to life in prison.
"The investigation is ongoing," Hill said.
