Don Stewart, Lely High School's Head Boys Basketball Coach for the past 26 years, has decided to step down, according to the Collier County School District.

Stewart reflected on a position he has held for the past quarter century.

"I have counted it a real privilege; but it is time to spend more time with my family," Don Stewart said.

Don Stewart came to Lely from Michigan in the 1983-1984 school year to become the Head Boys Basketball Coach and Defensive Co-coordinator for the football team. Under Coach Stewart, Lely's basketball team won 456 games, eight district titles and 10 20-win seasons. He was named South West Florida Coach of the Year 10 times.

"My philosophy at Lely has been to prepare young men for success on and off the court, to help them be the best they could be," Stewart said.

Speaking of wanting to spend more time with family, Coach Stewart's wife Tamie is principal at Lake Park Elementary School, and daughter Hannah is a student at Lely. His three sons graduated from Lely.

"Having all three play for me has certainly been one of my greatest thrills; it was a total family affair," Stewart said.

Son Stacey is currently a successful coach with a nationally-ranked football team at Camden County High School in Georgia. Scott, coaching at First Baptist Academy, was an All-State basketball player and University of Florida "Gator." He spent 10 years playing professional ball in Europe. And son Jared, a district 3-point champion while at Lely, is now a freshman at Liberty University studying law.

Coach Stewart plans to stay on staff at Lely. He is the chairman of the physical education department and is also sponsor of Fellowship of Christian Athletes.

"I want to help in any capacity I can to give Lely students a great experience," Stewart said. "High School is a special time in the lives of young people and needs to be a memorable one."
