Lely 20, Cypress Lake 10
Special to the Sun Times
The Lely Trojans welcomed back their running game, hanging on to defeat the host Cypress Lake Panthers, 20-10.
Senior running back Darion Hall led the way with 191 yards and a touchdown as the Trojans picked up a key District 3A-12 win.
"Our defense didn't come to play but our offense did just enough to get the win," said Lely coach Dave Miller.
The Trojans were coming off an emotional overtime win over Naples last week that may have affected their play against Cypress Lake.
"All week we preached no let downs," Miller said. "We've got a lot of work to do next week."
The game got off to an inauspicious start for the Panthers when they fumbled the ball away on the first play of the game. The Trojans were unable to capitalize, however as senior Ben Jean missed a 34-yard field goal.
"We won the toss and we wanted to come out start winning the time of possession battle right from the get go," said Panthers coach Michael Thornton. "Those kind of early mistakes are extremely frustrating."
Thornton's offense bounced back on their second possession when Logan Franklin hit a 32-yard field goal capping a nine play, 58-yard drive.
Cypress Lake's 3-0 lead didn't last long as Hall scored on a 3-yard run on Lely's next possession. Hall, a Miami Hurricanes commit, had just 465 yards through the first seven games but finally got on track for the Trojans Friday.
"We've been trying to limit his carries so that he'd be fresh for this stretch run," Miller said.
The Trojans appeared to be pulling away when senior Frank Pugh scored on a 7-yard run at the end of the third quarter to make it 14-3.
But the Panthers responded as senior Savon Seward, who rushed for 89 yards on 21 carries, scored on a 4-yard run up the middle to make it 14-10.
Jean made up for his earlier miss connecting on field goals from 20 and 37 yards to close out the win for Lely.
