The Christmas House and Business Committee met Nov. 14 at the home of Marty and Debbie Roddy to make final plans for the 13th annual decorating contest.
Enthusiasm is building among Marco Island residents as they prepare their homes for the contest in which more than 1,200 homes and 100-plus businesses were judged in 2008.
Marco Island has long been noted for the many outstanding holiday-lighted and decorated homes. Residents and visitors alike increase their Christmas spirit by driving around the Island to see the innovative decorations.
'Light up Marco'
"Judging the winner in the House and Business Decorating Contest is a difficult task, and one Christmas Island Style judges take very seriously," said Jeanne Rice, co-chairman. "The judging teams travel on every road on Marco from 6:30-10:30 p.m. on those dates."
For the house decorating contest, the committee divides the Island into nine geographic areas with nine teams of volunteers who travel on every road for the preliminaries and selects the top candidates. Of those selected, the top 10 make it to the finals.
New in 2007, individual businesses now enjoy their own contest as the committee continually strives to "light up Marco."
Final judging Dec. 12
The final 10 homes are judged by the entire membership of the House Decorating Committee riding on the Marco Trolley, which is decorated for the evening by Marco Island Florist.
Typically, there is a car caravan following the trolley so they get to see the best homes plus the decorated businesses.
Judging is done between 6:30-10 p.m.
Contest prizes
The night of the finals, the top 10 receive a finalist plaque.
The winner of the house contest receives a check for $500.
The house winner and the business winner each receive the traditional yard sign and a winners plaque.
The event is sponsored by LCEC and the judging transportation is sponsored by Marco Island Trolley.
The addresses of the finalists and a mention of others "worth viewing" will be provided to the local media on Wednesday, Dec. 16, so "Christmas revelers" may drive around Marco and view the wonderful decorations.
