Comfort in store

When Hurricane Sandy hit New Jersey in 2012, Rick and Greg Sumer’s three mattress stores near the beach were spared devastation, but it go them to thinking:

Now’s the time to leave.

“The storm … and the winters in New Jersey … we thought it was a good time to make a move,” said Rick Shumer, who along with his dad Greg got straight back into the business this past January on Marco Island. They called the business, situated in the Pelican Plaza on Bald Eagle Drive opposite Progressive Auto, Marco Island Mattress Company.

The father-and-son team had looked around the entire Naples area upon their arrival in 2014, but chose Marco when they found out it didn’t have a mattress store.

“We saw the niche,” said Rick Shumer.

At the same time, they also realized that competitive pricing would be a must, despite Marco’s image of unbridled affluence.

“We decided on a 100 percent lowest price guarantee,” said Greg Shumer.

Other incentives include free delivery and set up, removal of old bedding and also an unlimited “comfort exchange” policy if customers are dissatisfied with their particular purchases.

Brands include Serta and Dunlopillo, and gel memory foam, top pocked quill lines and graphite infused latex are some of the components – a far cry from the old days of straw, feathers or horse hair-stuffed mattresses.

Prices vary all the way from $499 to close to $5,000 for the ultimate comfort, said Greg Shumer.

Disney trip for family who lost mom

Making good on an an annual pledge to send a deserving family away on a holiday trip, the Law Offices of William G. Morris has just announced the recipient.

Called the ‘For the Family’ trip (to Disney), it goes to Jose Mendiolaza and his two children Nicolas and Andres. The Mendiolaza recently suffered the loss of the family’s wife and mother to cancer. The firm hopes that the gift of a trip to Disney will help them through a difficult time.

The program began in 2013, as the firm’s 30th anniversary appreciation. Instead of throwing a party to celebrate, the firm elected to begin a program of giving a gift to a needy family.

Nicolas Mendiolaza is 11 years old and his brother Andre is 3 years old. Nicolas is a competitive swimmer, soccer player and enjoys athletics. Andre loves the beach and family dinners. When asked what they are most excited about, both said roller coasters and riding “Jake and the Neverland Pirates.”
